I got clothed and went outside at around 9 o clock. However it was still a bit to light. The temperature was dropping fast. When i removed my facemask to make easier to adjust the camera, my beard was frozen solid about two minutes. I set up my camera and waited. Did a couple of test shots and waited so more. Around 23 the show began. Subtle and dim at first. Then suddenly is was like a green light carved up the night sky and everything was lit in eerie green light. This very spectakular light show was much stronger then the city lights. And i had to correct my exposure. I lasted about 10 mins. Then the light intensity fell back down to normal levels. Just enough time to do a panorama.
I finally got the picture of the aurora i was after. The last two days at the Ice Hotel is was up all night taking pictures.
The aurora borealis is caused by solar winds which radiates the atmosphere. The sun has an 11 year cycle peak to peak. 2014 will be the year in which solar activity is at it’s peak. So the chance of seeing the aurora beorealis is greatest aournd this time.
For those of you who just can’t get enough, all the panoramas form the icehotel is on my blog.
