Roskilde Cathedral, Denmark. 2010
Known as the church which has the highest number royals burried. 21 king and 18 queens have been laid to rest here, in beautiful sarcophagus’s. It is one of only two sites in Denmark, currently on UNESCO’c world heritage list. (The other site being the Jelling stones)
This room is the chapel of Christian the 1st, Frederik the 2nd and Christian the 3rd. Also known as holy three kings chapel. Construction of the chapel began in 1459 and was commissioned by Christian the 1st.
The style of the wall paintings is pre renaissance. The paintings are 1 dimensional due to the fact that the use of perspective was not very widespread at the time. Perspective was invented in Florence around 1423. But the idea had not yet reached Denmark. Since there was no use of perspective, painting a scene with a meaningful background, was rather difficult. Therefor the “empty spaces” are filed with floral decorations.
This is one of my favorite rooms in the church.
