Machu Picchu was discovered in 1908 by an expedition led by Hiram Bingham. Thought to be the missing city of the Incas. I is believed that this must have been a holy site since farming the sounding terraces would not have supported a big population.
This was a perfect climax of a somewhat difficult trek. We were tired and happy. We did a lot of exploring after noon when many of the tourist were gone. I then hatched a plan. The following day we would sneak up the mountain and hide. When the night came we would find a spot and take a picture of a star lit Machu Picchu. It made sense since they were into astronomy. However as it turned out I was trapped on the mountain alone in an electrical storm. I didn’t get my picture. So I will have to come back.
